This dress is one of the most versatile ones around, like most Rockabilly dresses it is available in a size 8 to a size 16 (18, 20 & 22 have already sold out). Wear it alone on the warmer autumnal days for a chic way to stay cool. Team it with the cutest of warm woolly shrugs for those cooler of fall evenings. The sharp neckline and colour combination make this designer dress an eye catching one. This dress comes with a cute cotton belt to pinch in the waist for that fabulous hourglass figure!

Vintage Hen Do

Last weekend I attended a Vintage themed hen party as the bride-to-be adores pinup, burlesque and vintage tea parties, so this creative retro-inspired hen do was a wonderful revival of rockin' tunes, tea (and cocktails), cakes and 50's swing dresses from Rockabilly Pinup

While the Lipstick and Curls talented mobile styling team were armed with curling tongs, hairspray and makeup to bring pinup glamour back, creating Victory rolls, red lips and bold seductive eyes for everyone at the party in the comfort of our home in South West London.(Great, as it was pouring with rain)

I felt this was a great way to introduce the guests to Rockabilly styling as some of the girls were new to the look and really loved the sleek hairdo's and bright fun makeup and sexy dresses.

After all the ladies were beautifully dolled up and few fun snaps, we sat down to create our own vintage themed
cupcakes with the bride-to-be under the watchful eye of Nel Rennison owner of www.thepapercupkitchen.co.uk.

Followed by Afternoon Vintage Tea  including open finger sandwiches, warm scones with homemade jam, lemon curd and Cornish clotted cream, a selection of English traditional cakes and special teas served in beautiful china which was hired from Prim and Proper Vintage.

We then decided to hit the town for some more cocktails and a bit of dancing and much to everyone's delight not a flashing willy in sight…(ok maybe some crazy glasses but that's it!).

So if you are looking for something new to try or just want to introduce your friends to your style this is a great way to have some fun and look amazing!

Pretty stud earrings at Rockabilly Pinup

While the dress and the hair and the make up are all important with the Rockabilly look-there is something to be said for the more subtle pieces of jewellery. Stud earrings for example are super sweet when worn with any Rockabilly outfit. This is especially the case when going for that 'Rosie the Riveter' look. Team your sexy little studs with a tied at the top red bandanna for effortless chic.

Practical as well as super stylish you will be surprised how much attention these little earrings can get. And we are not talking about the Swarovski crystal ball studs that are everywhere at the moment (although these are lovely too). Stud earrings come in a wide range of shapes, styles and sizes. With everything from cute cherries to macho anchors, take your pick form any rocking Rockabilly motif stud earring style available at Rockabilly Pinup. Not sure where to start? Here are just a few to get you started:

Swallow Stud earrings by Alchemy

Swallows are at the heart of many Rockabilly outfits. They make for gorgeous prints on dresses as well as hair grips and brooches. Vintage and so very chic we would go so far as to say a swallow or two is essential. Swallows are stunning birds and represent a beauty as well as flying free! A pretty symbol of rebellion that will look awesome on all Rockabilly girls! These small studs are so delicately understated- but do not be fooled by their innocence. They certainly pack a punch when it comes to getting that Rockabilly chic just right. You can wear these studs with everything. Whether it is a formal skirt suit and blouse or with a full on halterneck rockabilly dress.
Bow Belles Skull and crystal stud earrings
Here you have two of the hottest Rockabilly trends around combined as one. Just as dainty as the swallow earrings is the Bow Belles Skull and Crystal stud earring. Skulls are symbols that really cross the boundaries and will allow you to wear these earrings as a Gothic or Rockabilly accessory. The tiny skulls are just big enough to be noticed, red and white rhinestones complete this set of earrings and make them sparkly. The bows undoubtedly make these pretty accessory a Rockabilly one. However you see these earrings you can be sure that they will be a subtle but noticeable summer statement!

Red Polka Heart Stud earrings by Sourpuss
Studs on a stud! You simply cannot get better than these studded earrings. Each polka dot on these enamelled earrings can be felt. These tiny little studs stick up and can be felt bringing a cool rockabilly texture to your ear lobes. The heart shape is also a very quirky Rockabilly motif that absolutely everyone loves! This design is also available in a nautical blue and gold version too.

Dita Von Teese for Rockabilly Pin Up

Dita wearing a lush victory roll hairdo
She has her own clothing line, perfume and is now involved in creating a range of retro designed homewares but it is Dita Von Teese's style that has grabbed all the headlines. Hers is an image that is instantly recognisable all over the world. The bright red pout and deep dark hair have become the model and dancer's trademark look, one that we couldn't imagine her without. The retro style is a world away from anything we imagine our grandmother wearing.

But where does her vintage style come from? Burlesque is a performance that was popular in America during the 1920's and 30's. It is a combination of glamour and fantasy with the controversial striptease too. These are set to lavish backgrounds and sets that only add to the whole effect. Burlesque came at the right time, especially as most of the world was going to war. Pin up models were a form of beauty in a world that was dealing with the atrocities of war.

It is only natural that Dita would have taken on the fashion of the time as part of her performances. But she soon made the vintage look very much her own. And audiences were to find that her costumes were very multifaceted. Along with the cute secretary look they could find Gothic and fetish influences as well the wholesome all-American girl look. Not to mention Rockabilly!

Gingham fabrics and frills are the way to go!
She can afford to wear the most daring of outfits, especially with a body shape to die for. Rockabilly outfits are designed to be figure flattering, even more so in the case of the more curvier girls like Dita. The burlesque star was best known in the early days as a 'tight lacer', someone who shrunk their waist with the help of tightly bound corsets. This gave her some recognition on the fetish world. However Dita moved on from her days as a fetish icon. She has experimented with style in a way that no other model has done to date. Taking it further Dita bought into the vintage lifestyle buying up a fleet of classic cars to go beautifully with her choice of outfits. What is so inspiring is her real attention to detail, it's the rock solid victory rolls in her hair, the hourglass figures often completed with a series of petticoats.

Dita Von Teese looking sensational in a Rockabilly style outfit.
How can you get the showgirl look for yourself?  It's the details that really count with Dita's look. Invest in a few key pieces such as a classical crimson red lip liner, jet black eye liner is a must. A handful of classically designed Rockabilly dresses will get you started. Heels are high with this style but you can get away with mid height also.

For a kick start to your Dita Von Teese inspired Rockabilly wardrobe take a look at Rockabilly Pinup's range of dresses and accessories.

Top Rockabilly Tattoos

Us Rockabilly gals and guys love tattoos! Getting inked is a growing thing with more of us going under the needle and loving it!

Full length tattoo sleeves with a quirky vintage dress or quiff and teddy boy get up could not be hotter. It's tough but undeniably stylish at the same time. Thinking about getting ink done for the first time but not sure what to get? Here are some top Rockabilly body art to inspire:

Retro Roses: A feminine tattoo motif that is mega popular with both the guys and the girls! Everyone loves roses. They look great on all shapes and sizes which is a bonus. That bright red shows up beautifully wherever it is placed on the body. Roses on the chest make for an unusual but pretty quirky look. Something away from the traditional arm tattoos. Wear with your low cut dress and a patterned scarf tied in your hair for an alternative vintage chic.

Sinister Skulls: Skull tattoos can be done any way you want them to be! As sugar skulls or something a lot more terrifying. A motif that has been used so much in the military in past years. Also a popular with those wanting a reminder that death is always so close by. Skulls look fab with roses, spiders webs for a Halloween look for Samhain fans. Mexican Day of the Dead Skulls make for some of the most vibrant tattoos.

Ahoy Anchors: The sailor theme is a strong  one, anyone who is serious about Rockabilly will have something Anchor-like on their person. Whether it be a pretty pendant and pair of neon earrings or a more permanent thing! Tattoos can look attractive almost anywhere you decided to have them, especially when it comes to fierce Rockabilly ones. Have your Anchor or roses on the top of your feet! Your tootsies will look awesome in any pair of heels from this moment on!

Gorgeous girls: Those pin up tattoo's are a real hit. The late Amy Winehouse sported a vintage lady on her arm. Girls on girls is a very sexy look when it comes to ink. Dare to express your inner goddess or ideal woman through your body art!

Stars: stylized stars add more than a hint of glitz to a Rockabilly outfit. Even more so when it is a tattoo! Check out these gorgeous examples of star clusters. The perfect Rockabilly tattoo can be finished off nicely with a group of black or gold stars. Even stars alone can express your sparkly side.

Cherries: Find them on cute earrings, sweet little pendants on necklaces even brooches- but how cool are they as tattoos? The answer is 'Very'! These small fruits are pretty as a single tattoo on a shoulder or as part of your bigger group of Rockabilly motif tattoos!

Rockabilly Daily Essentials

Always a trend setter, never a follower. Joan Crawford remains a timeless icon in Rockabilly fashion and style. With an all time favourite fashion quote from the lady herself :-

"1.Find your own style and have the courage to stick to it. 2. Choose your clothes for your way of life. 3. Make your wardrobe as versatile as an actress. It should be able to play many roles. 4. Find your happiest colours - the ones that make you feel good. 5. Care for your clothes, like the good friends they are!” Joan Crawford

When wearing Rockabilly fashions its not all about taking hours and hours of dressing up to achieve pinup perfection on a daily basis. Rockabilly girls can easily maintain their sexy style with everyday outfits and a few basic essentials.

1. Hair and Make-Up
Bandanas, Roses and Hair Rolls are a simple way to keep within the Rockabilly theme. Slap on some red lippy and black eyeliner to create effortless flicks. Plus if you wear glasses then add a pair of retro- statement specs.

2. Jewellery
Rockabilly or Tattoo inspired jewellery usually involves a statement necklace or brooch, and earrings which are usually very budget friendly, and is something we all hunt for!

3. Rockabilly Prints and Patterns
Polka dots, leopard print, nautical prints, tattoo prints in red, black, blue and white are all timeless Rockabilly colours that can be mixed and matched easily with wardrobe staples. For summer gingham, floral and fruity prints work really well too.

4. Wardrobe Essentials
Pencil or swing skirts are an absolute must have and jeans can be cropped, tight fitting or high-waisted to flatter and give the shape you want to but still let you rock and roll!

5. Handbags
Finally make sure you pick out the perfect vintage style handbag to complete your 1950's look.

Rockabilly Rolls- All you need to know on Rockabilly hair!

There are a few things that anyone has to keep in mind when getting their Rockabilly hair just right. Here is a quick guide on the main elements of doing just that.

The Haircut: Having the right hair style is an essential aspect of the Rockabilly look. You need to keep to the 'era', which would be mostly the 1940's and 50's, and your cut must be simple as well as practical. It should be able to be styled in many different ways. For this style your hair will be cut to approximately four inches throughout. This is apart from the sections in front of the ears which will be a little shorter. This length allows for a good 'curling' of hair all over the head. Platinum blonde is a great style but dyed-black hair is a 'classic' Rockabilly look.

  1. Bettie Page: The Bettie Page style is the essential hairstyle of the Rockabilly Pin Up look. Named after the (in)famous 1950's pin-up model and actress, the fringe is short and straight across the forehead to show off strongly shaped eyebrows, whilst the rest of the hair is longer, preferably up to shoulder length. This long hair is often pulled back into a high pony tail, or it can also be curled and left hanging over the shoulders.

  2. Victory Rolls: This is a style straight from the 1940's. Sections of hair are rolled up and pinned to the head to create tube-like structures of hair. It is so popular with this neo-vintage trend as it is not a style that is static. This look also has the shorter strands of hair at the front of the ears too. Victory rolls can also be stacked one on top of the other should you need a little extra height.

  3. Pin Curls: Pin curls are made by rolling up sections of damp hair around a finger, then sliding them off and pinning the curls to the head using pins - hence the name. They work in the same way as Victory rolls do, except they're smaller. Once the hair is dry you can brush out the hair to create waves if you wish. This makes for a really great relaxed and free, loose hair styled look. Pink does an amazing updated version of pin curls, albeit with one side of her head shaved.

  4. Bouffant: One of the more classic Rockabilly hairstyles that women can have is the bouffant, also known as a 'beehive'. The hair on top of the head is sprayed, teased and combed into position so that it gives the hair a raised structure. This look can have several variations. For instance, you may want to have a short 'Bettie Page' fringe at the front for a more modern look.

  5. Hair Scarves: There is nothing more Rockabilly than a patterned hair scarf! Pull up your hair from the back, support it with the scarf and tie a bit knot at the front of the band. And the choice of patterns available is ample. Paisley, floral, anchors, skulls, and tattoos to name but a few. There is a super selection of Rockabilly scarves at Rockabilly Pin Up too!
